West Tanfield is in Wensleydale just a few miles north of Ripon. This popular view greets the traveller approaching the village from the south on the A6108.
On the far left is the famous Marmion Tower, a 15th century gatehouse now in the care of English Heritage.
Near by are Thornborough Henges, the ‘Stonehenge of the North’ and the remains of the abandoned medieval village of East Tanfield.
