There are 21 thread colours and in this design some, but not many, half stitches and backstitches have been used to give a more realistic look. These are very important as they add the finishing touch. The back stitch is particularly important as it provides the detail to the cottage windows.

This would be your first glimpse of Shieldaig if you approached from the south, with the Scots Pine covered Shieldaig Island not far from the shore. This island is a Nature Reserve now owned by the National Trust for Scotland. Visitors frequently see herons, cormorants, pine martens, seals, porpoises, otters and even the occasional dolphin and whale.
